Morning Subjects
Religion: We have started out the year by learning about the Holy Family and the Blessed Trinity. We are doing several projects in class on these topics. We will also be talking about the church and the seven sacraments.
Daily 5: This year we will be incorporating The Daily 5 into our day. It is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.
The Daily 5 is made up of 5 components. They are: Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Word Work. We will have two to three 15 minute sessions where students will be working on these five areas.
Between the sessions, we will meet together for mini lessons and to reflect on how our sessions went. While students are working on the Daily 5, I will be meeting with small reading groups.
CAFE: CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding vocabulary. In our classroom, we will use the structure of CAFE to focus on reading comprehension strategies. These are specific strategies that students need to become better readers. These reading strategies are taught as mini-lessons in between Daily 5 sessions.
The students will always be working on a particular CAFE strategy as their individual reading goal. Once the strategy is mastered, they will choose a new strategy to work on. I will be meeting with the students individually to assess and coach them with their strategy. The strategies are organized on a CAFE menu in our classroom, which serves as a visual aid for the students.
Ask them at night when they read their books, what their goals are and what they are doing to reach their goals.
Reading: Some skills we will be working on as a large group and in our small groups are: making images in our head, identifying characters, setting and events, asking and answering questions, and finding key details. Our themes for Unit 1 are Friends, Families, Pets and Animals.
.
Spelling: Spelling pretests are given each Monday. The test consists of 15 words. If your child gets 2 or less wrong on the pretest he/she will have 11-15 high frequency and challenge words in addition to the word(s) that were missed on the pretest. If your child gets more than 2 wrong, he/she will have all 15 words as his/her spelling list that week. Please have your child practice the words throughout the week so he/she is prepared for the test on Friday.
Grammar: Our Grammar skills for Unit 1 in Wonders are: recognizing different types of sentences, identifying the subject and predicate in a sentence, using commas and quotation marks correctly, and learning how to expand our sentences.
Writing: We are learning how to become better writers. We are learning about the parts of a sentence as well as different types of ending punctuation. We are also learning how to add more detail to our stories. We work on writing 3-4 times a week.
